Do you encode your software? Generally not. The source code for all projects or works is provided in an open format. In the case where software is released in an encoded format, the source code will still be available subject to payment of a small fee to cover the cost of distribution. What license is software released under? For project work and free products we generally like to release everything under the GNU GPL Version 2 or other compatible license, such as the LGPL for libraries. It's just simpler that way. Does your license comply with Joomla!'s guidelines? Yes. We are releasing code under the same license as Joomla!, or under a license that is compatible. This gives you maximum freedom to include our work with Joomla! as well as other GPL or LGPL based works. Are you a Commercial GPL Business? Yes. New Life in IT releases free (as in free beer) software, and free (as in freedom) commercial software under the same GPL license. Our company is underpinned by a mix of commercial software sales, services, support and training. Can I distribute your Commercial GPL components even if I bought it? Yes, this is allowable under the terms of the GPL so don't feel guilty about it. It would be naive of us to think that sharing of commercial software doesn't happen. If you find a friend using our software and want to try it before you buy, our license allows legal distribution. If you find our products useful then buy a copy to encourage further development or if you are in need of personal support. Can I remove the copyright notices from the source or the program output? No. The GPL license stipulates that you cannot remove these without our permission. This includes any notice in the actual source files, and also includes "watermarks" in the output of the administrator component. In this way people will know that we are the original developers of the product should they wish to contact us. Can I install your Commercial GPL software on as many sites or domains as I like? Yes. When you buy our commercial software it's released under the GPL so you can legally put it on as many sites as you wish. There is no restriction. What do I get when I buy your Commercial GPL software? You of course get the source of the software. You will be notified of any updates to the software in advance of the public announcements. You will have access to a community forum for other people that have also purchased the same software. You will have access to premium content (tips, tutorials, "ask the expert", etc) and videotorials as they come available. Can I distribute or show other people Premium Content that I can access when I purchase your Commercial GPL software? No. When you purchase our software you agree to the license terms to access premium content which are for personal use only and does not allow you rights to redistribution those works. If you would like to use any premium content or media in, for example, a user group presentation, please call us as permission may be granted on a case by case basis. Do you offer addition support packages for your Commercial GPL software? Yes. Call us about your needs and we will tailor a package to suit your budget and requirements. Are upgrades to your Commercial GPL software free? Minor upgrads are free. These are upgrades where the major version number doesn't change, like version 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3. Upgrades between major versions, like version 1 to 2 to 3, will incur a discounted fee. Who will own the copyright for software you produce? Generally New Life in IT Pty Ltd will retain copyright on all works. In this way we can keep our overheads lower for everyone because we can recycle source code over many projects. There are exceptions, and they would be where we are hired to help you out with a specific invention of yours. But in those cases you would also be expected to pay premium rates. How much do you charge? It varies depending on the project, scope and level of detail provided. Scoping studies are typically done on a Time and Materials basis, whereas projects can be done on fixed and variable cost contracts. Projects local to Australia will be quoted in Australian Dollars. Our general consulting rate is AU$220 (including GST for Australian customers) per hour for any services. Do you require a deposit? Yes. For services under about $1000, or for pay-per-hour arrangements, payment in full is required before commencement. For projects up to about $2000 it is generally 50% to start, and 50% on delivery. For projects over $2000 the progress payment scheme is generally 40% to start, 40% once the beta milestone is reached and 20% on delivery. Very large or long term projects may have different schedules for progress payments. How can I make payments? In Australia, by a cheque drawn on an Australian Bank (sorry, international cheques are not accepted) or by direct bank transfer. International payments can be made by Paypal or telegraphic money transfer.
